François Colbert is professor of marketing and holder of the Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management at HEC Montréal. In addition to his duties as academic supervisor of the Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées en gestion d'organismes culturels (DESSGOC- Graduate Diploma in the Management of Cultural Organizations), he is publisher of the International Journal of Arts Management (IJAM). In May 2002 he was awarded the Order of Canada for his many achievements and for his unique contributions in developing the field of arts management.
Professor Colbert has been active in the field of arts and culture for over 30 years, particularly in the performing arts, museum and film sectors. He has given numerous training and professional development seminars in arts management, with a focus on the field of marketing management in a cultural context. He is a past or present member of the board of directors of many cultural organizations and served as vice-chair of the Canada Council for the Arts for eight years, until 2003. He currently teaches two courses offered as part of the DESSGOC program, Marketing Cultural Organizations and Cultural Policies. He is also the author of Le Marketing des arts et de la culture, now in its second edition and available in English as Marketing Culture and the Arts, as well as in German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Ukrainian (and soon in Korean). Professor Colbert is founding president and co-chair of the scientific committee of the International Conference on Arts and Cultural Management (AIMAC).
François Colbert is the author of more than 150 publications including articles in refereed and non-refereed journals, books, chapters in books, proceedings, bibliographies and research reports, mainly on marketing of the arts. In addition, he has organized numerous conferences addressing topics related to cultural management. He has also given many talks and seminars on arts management both in Quebec and Canada and in 20 other countries including Australia, Belgium, Colombia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Spain and Japan.
Professor Colbert is also frequently called upon to act as a consultant for various companies, associations and governments.
